TC-II Members’ Update
June 2010
In previous correspondence to the TC-II members, we announced that we would hold a General Forum for the TC-II at the IEEE-DEST 2010 conference in Dubai. This event is to be conducted between 1:30pm-3:00pm on the 15th April 2010. TC-II committee members assembled in Dubai are:
- Professor Elizabeth Chang, Australia
- Professor Tharam Dillon, Australia
- Professor Ernesto Damiani, Italy
- Professor Achim Koduck, Germany
- Professor Marcus Wilhelm Kuster, Germany
- Dr. Christian Guetl,Austria
- Dr. Alex Talevski, Australia
- Dr. Farookh Hussain, Australia
- Mr. Stig Peterson, Norway
- Dr Shastri, L Nimmagadda, Schlumberger, Bogota, Colombia
There were several key items highlighted:
(1) Post-mortem of DEST2010 Conference; it was noted that despite the strong sponsorship and support from UAE local universities, including UAEU, UWOD, Sayed Uni.; the strong support from General Chairs and Technical Program Chairs from Australia and Germany; the collection of world class keynote speakers; the conference participation was low and the local participants from UAE were very low. Key issues highlighted the lack of efficiency in distribution of Call for papers, paper submission and paper review process, lack of clear understanding and communication of the new field of Digital Ecosystems research in the contact of ecology, bio-inspiration, science and engineering through tracks and sessions. It is envisaged that the greater improvement in these areas shall be achieved in DEST2011 under the leadership of the General chair of Professor JJ Lee and Professor Kuster.
(2) DEST2011 Conference General Chair and Date Changes
DEST 2011 was formally approved in IEEE ADCOM Dec 2008. The original proposed Chair, Prof Jo-Jang Lee stepped down on March 2010. The DEST organizing committee warmly welcomed the new General Chair Professor JJ Lee from KAIST, Korea, who was to replace previous nominated Chair Jo-Jang Lee of KAIST. Professor JJ Lee led his team who participated in DEST2010 in Dubai. This has given great confidence to the DEST community, participants and the DEST 2010 and 2011 organizing committee. We look forward to working under the leadership of Professor JJ Lee and hope to have a successful conference in Deajeon, Korea.
(3) DEST2012, DEST2013 and beyond
Following previous correspondence, the preliminary proposal for DEST 2012 in KL, Malaysia and DEST2013 in Gulin, China has been submitted to IEEE IES ADCOM in DEC 2009. A preliminary proposal from South Africa, Columbia, and Germany has been received for DEST 2014-2015, and this is to be discussed in the DEST 2011 conference in Korea.
The formal approval of DEST 2011 budget, DEST2012 and 2013 is subject to the IEEE IES ADCOM meeting to be held in Bari, Italy July 2-6, 2010.
(4) TIE Journal Publications
It was highlighted that only the best papers from the DEST conference series were invited to submit to the special session of TIE on Digital Ecosystems and Cyber Engineering. Due to the high quality papers, low number of invitations, the acceptance exceeded the threshold of IEEE TIE standard, and this caused the delay in acceptance of the Journal Papers. The strategy moved forward to improve the frequency and efficiency of call for submission, speed process of review, and parallel promotion with the conference and real time correspondence.
(5) TC-II contribution to IEEE IES
The TC-II Chair for 2010 is Professor Chang, DEBI Institute, Curtin Australia, and Professor Damiani, Uni. Milan, Dr Armango Colombo and Prof Yousef Ibrahim are the vice-chairs.
The TC-II committee has the responsibility of uniquely separating Industrial Informatics from Industrial Electronics in order to help shape the future of the ‘Transactions on Industrial Informatics (TII) (Impact factor 2.356)’ and to continue to strengthen "Transactions on Industrial Electronics (TIE) (Impact factor 5.6)" which is part of the TC-II.
TC-II committee members shall help to look after any existing and new special sessions on TIE and TII, through the distribution of Call for Journal Papers and the recruitment of quality paper submissions, review and promotion.
TC-II committee members shall help IEEE IES core sponsored conferences such as IEEE IECON, IEEE ISIE, IEEE ICIT, IEEE IES II, etc, IES co-sponsored conference, IES small conferences, workshops, and tracks.
For all TC-II committee, we have a duty to help define the new research direction for industrial informatics over the next 5 to 10 years and to help IEEE IES lead the world in this field through our leadership.
The Chair would like to thank the TC-II co-chairs for their support and cooperation in the last 6 months. Thanks go to Professor Ernesto Damiani, Dr. Armando Walter Colombo; and Professor Yousef Ibrahim.
Should you have any recommendations, questions or suggestions regarding this technical committee, I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely
Professor Elizabeth Chang Chair, IEEE-IES TC-II
